Our Speaker

Program – MichelleHenson Presented: Wally McCall of The C.R.E.W

He discussed the ever widening mission of the C.R.E.W. Much of the work done now is paid for by indivuals, not the government. Focus less on individuals needing counceling and the people working in and “graduating” from the C.R.E.W. tend to be outstanding individuals.

Our speaker, Wendy

Program – Lake
Casitas Rowing Association – Wendy Gillette

Wendy is co-coach
with her husband Eric, of Lake Casitas Rowing.  Mike Leigh introduced Wendy and thanks her
program for helping his son become a successful young adult.   Eric
Gillette rowed professionally, and chose Lake Casitas to open up a West Coast
rowing venue.  Much rowing is done in
the East, and Wendy and Eric wanted to create something unique in
California.  Lake Casitas was the site of the 1984 Olympic Rowing Events, which created huge interest in the sport in California at that time.  Lake Casitas Rowing Association opened it’s doors in 2008, with a small number of youth and adult rowers.  They now train 60 youth and 140 adult rowers.  Wendy and Eric wanted to help with youth from the start, a program  like theirs help with focus, physically & mentally. Girls learn confidence and that their bodies are machines that can work.  Every day the emphasis s on the fact that the young people can do it! When teens have success as teens, they become successful adults. Investing in youth in the community is investing in your community.  Everything on the boats must move in a
coordinated manner.   Wendy and Eric see that rowing as a sport has surged on the West Coast.

Economic problems have impacted Lake Casitas Rowing, in particular the youth programs. (each youth costs average $1500 for the year, which includes equipment, uniforms,
lodging at meets), and Wendy announced that she “never turns down any offer of funds”.  Several young people are given scholarships to be able to continue to participate.  Oxnard Rotary sponsored a youth for one year who was on scholarship.

Wendy showed a short video of the program on the lake as well as some of the important
training.  The organization has 1,2,4 & 8 person boats.  Some have 2 oars for sculling, or one oar for sweep rowing. The youth  team made finals in Sacramento last year, which was a major goal. Another major goal is to eventually reach a membership of 100 youth and 100 adults, and to be able to hire more coaches to help Wendy and Eric with this amazing endeavor.
