Program – Dawn O’Bar – Unite To Light
The organization, Unite to Light, has its web page at www.unite-to-light.org… Please go there for more information or to purchase lights or donate.

1.5 Billion people have no electricity; therefore, no electric lights. Alternatives are few and difficult and some, like oil and kerosene lamps are dirty and health risks. Unite To Light tries to get low cost, rechargeable lights to many people in this population around the world. They have a product which is a solar rechargeable LED reading light. It is shock and water resistant… as it may be placed outside for recharging and not retrieved before it gets rained on or knocked off the roof. Its only consumable part is a rechargeable battery which needs replacing every couple of years if used and recharged nearly every day. The bulb is good for many years.

They started this project when people in Ghana asked for a student’s reading light so the kids could do their homework after dark. But now it is used as part of emergency medical kits, midwife work, etc. 13,000+ lamps have been distributed. They partner with many organizations and are an official project of Rotary International. One of their distribution partners is Direct Relief International (Santa Barbara).

The lamps are available for purchase for $10 if you are purchasing in quantity to distribute through a project and for $27 if you want one for yourself (it’s really a two for one deal… buy one for yourself and they will distribute a second one to someone who is without electricity.)

Todays Program

Today we got to learn a bit more about two of our members – Father Steve Ochoa and Donna Jones.

Father Steve has a love affair with the country of Peru. Spending time there as part of his education, he learned to live with an entirely different culture and learned the meaning of “Needs and Necessities”. Amongst the various trades he learned in Peru, making adobe brick put a smile on his face.

Donna Jones was born north of the border in Midland, Canada. In earlier years she participated in the Rotary exchange program, worked for two breweries, and went to school at the University of Waterloo. She met her husband at Lake Tahoe while earning her Masters and they have been together ever since. She currently teaches at Villanova High School and advises young girls at Thacher School.
