Last but not least, Howard Smith gave us the newest on Stop the Trucks:

The coalition has pushed a deal with the asphalt plant in Santa Paula.  They promise not to drive their trucks through our town.

The Santa Barbara Planning commission will likely ban trucks coming south through Ojai.

However, the Ventura County Planning Commission, in a surprise move, announced that they will allow the Ozena Mine to haul scrap concrete "up the mountain" for processing, and back down again.  This on a three-month "trial basis", for CalTrans.

"We think this is a huge violation of their permit.  There's a conflict at the county as to what they can and cannot do.  Our lawyers are talking to their lawyers to get that blocked.  We are also trying to get them to turn over scores of documents that we've requested."

"This may go to court in the near future," Howard said.

You be the Judge:

Two men were arrested as they were halfway completed with knocking a hole in the rear alley wall of a liquor store.  They were charged with breaking and entering.  Their attorney appealed, arguing that they never had the chance to enter the store and therefore the charge was inappropriate.

Answer:  The state supreme court agreed with the defense lawyer.

Happy Buck$

 Mike Caldwell

Mike, wearing a yellow T-shirt touted the kickoff of the "Save Our Schools" campaign, along with all the PTO's and PTA's in the Valley.

Governator Schwarzenegger has announced he will cut a million from local school budgets, in addition to the million we are already losing, due to declining enrollment. "Meiner's Oaks, a distinguished school, may become an extinguished school," he said.

SOS is engaged in a letter-writing campaign to protest the cuts.  The group is also trying to raise $350-thousand locally to replace the lost funds.

Member Linda Taylor, soon to be inducted into Living Treasures, explained that citizens cannot donate to save a particular teacher's job.  They are let go by seniority.  "I can't tell you how much damage these cuts will do to our schools,"  Linda said.

 Matt Storey

Matt is one proud papa, two bucks worth. His daughter was accepted to five colleges.

Also, the Spring Arts Fling made $31,000 for the Besant Hill School.

(No fines this week.)

 Jack and Jane McClenahan

The McClenahans are just back from South Korea. Last Sunday, Jane spoke to 2,800 Korean business and professional leaders.  She displayed slides of our town, our local projects, and joint projects.

Governor Jane told us all about the three vans that our joint venture with Mexico and Korea provided, to give Korean handicapped children mobility.  Our club has donated $5,000.  Moro Bay, and Bakersfield are lead donor clubs also. Each is partnered with a Korean Rotary Club, and a Mexican Club, as we have for the past ten years.

Our participation will be rewarded by the opportunity to give out four Paul Harris Fellowships.

 Phil Adams

Phil pointed out that Korean Clubs contributed to Ojai's Search and Rescue Dogs, in the first instance of a foreign country supporting our District's humanitarian efforts.
 Dietrich Pahnke

Dietrich said he received 180 letters from Anacapa High School for his presentation on "Tolerance and Intolerance".   He spoke to five classes of thirty students each.

Also, he presented a custom-built, collapsible Hula Hoop to Rich McArthur, who will demonstrate it for us.

 Ross Atkinson

Ross and Patty and grandparents are off to see His daughter Elyse's senior concert recital, in New Jersey.  She is pictured at the far left, above.   Remember how great On a Different Note was during their tour?

Featured Program:   War on Polio

Incoming President John Kenyon and Maud Huey-Kenyon recounted their trip to India and Nigeria to inoculate children there against the scourge of polio.

John, dressed in native garb, displayed some of his photography, and three videos.  Three members of their NID team were guests today.

Parting Thought:

"When wealth is lost, nothing is lost.  When health is lost, something is lost.  When character is lost, all is lost."

Parting Shot...

Local Stars --  Fumie and Robert Chiang are the owners of  Giorgio's Sports Bar, at the corner of Park Rd. and East Ojai Avenue.   Last December, one of their customers asked if they'd like to be in a TV commercial for an  insurance company.  They agreed.  This week the ad began to appear on national TV.  You can see it on CNN.  They see it on their large-screen TVs, and when it appears, the customers cheer.   The ad also features their daughters Yuki (pictured at center) and Momoko, who is now visiting in Japan.  Earlier this year, SelectQuote filmed a commercial starring the owners of Bonnie Lu's Restaurant.                              Photo  © 2008   Daly Road Graphics
