Special
Presentation -- Paul Harris Fellowship
Ken Umholtz was
honored by his next door neighbor, member Ray Smith.
| Ken has been a
teacher of physics and mathematics at Nordhoff High School for the past
33 years, and a water sports coach. He has earned the respect of
of his colleagues and students alike. Members Mike Caldwell
of the Ojai Education Foundation, and Linda Taylor, a former
School Board member, rose to praise him.
Two years
ago, Ken's youngest child Raynor was diagnosed with leukemia, and began
a course of chemo, antibiotics, and steroids. The treatment was
necessary, but its effects were brutal. Ken quit his job in order
to be with the child constantly.
"It was a
towering challenge, but the entire family stepped up to it and made
considerable sacrifices in their own lives to bring Raynor back to
health," Ray told us.
Ken agreed,
noting that even his 5-year-old Dieter did not resent all the
attention his younger brother was getting.
|
|
Ray tried to have the plaque made
out in both Ken's and his wife Mary Beth's names, but Rotary was not
flexible about it.
Ray sees his neighbor every day,
and told the club that "the extraordinary is often masked by the
familiar."
Ken was given a round of applause
for his years of service to the youth and parents of the Ojai Valley.

This morning we heard Greg Gamble,
Executive Director of the Ojai Land Conservancy.
“Protect the Ojai Valley For Future Generations”
|

|
| Greg discussed the mission of the
Land Conservancy which is to and discussed upcoming projects.
He discussed the
10-year old Matilija Dam removal project, and the costs. |
|
Priority areas of the Land Conservancy are:
(1) Ventura River Conservation Area. The Ventura River corridor offers the greatest concentration of resource values of any area in the Ojai Valley. The collection of threatened and endangered species, views, the significance of the river’s water supply for our agricultural and residential communities, and the recreational / educational opportunities along the Ventura River are unsurpassed in OVLC’s area of interest.
(2) San Antonio Creek Conservation Area. Similar to the Ventura River Conservation Area, the San Antonio Creek corridor provides excellent habitat values and is a significant travel corridor in the Ojai Valley. Although the San Antonio Creek is a tributary of the Ventura River and therefore is technically part of priority area #1.
(3) Signature Landscapes. “Signature Landscapes” are a collection of lands which share the commonality of being identified on the short list of the Ojai Valley’s most special places. Signature Landscapes fall into a few categories, including “gateway” views along primary travel routes, scenic lands, and other places of particular ecological value like the Ojai Meadows Preserve.
(4) Agricultural Lands. Agricultural lands are an integral part of the identity of the Ojai Valley, and the permanent protection of sustainable agriculture continues as a priority for the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy.
The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy does hold conservation easements and in many cases donating or selling these conservation or agricultural easements can provide a substantial tax benefit.
